Van Buren County Veterans Services will issue its first two emotional support animals to local veterans under a new program this week. Director David Krzycki tells WSJM News he had the idea of offering the animals to veterans who could benefit when he started with the office about a year ago. How do they determine who will get the animals?
“We look for veterans with need,” Krzycki said. “Mostly what we go off of is a recommendation from the medical community, the mental health community, and then we have to do a survey with a one on one interview with myself to make sure the need is there.”
There are then interviews with the handler. Krzycki says Van Buren County Veterans Services will issue two dogs to local veterans on Friday at 10 a.m. at the county courthouse. The dogs were trained Warrior K9s LLC/Magnum K9 out of Sturgis. He plans to issue two more dogs next year and continue the program after that.
