Van Buren County Road Commission welcomes students for hands-on learning

Students from the Bert Goens Learning Center experienced hands-on learning as staff from the Van Buren County Road Commission recently visited the Van Buren County Intermediate School campus in Lawrence.

“We set up a touching table with road materials like slag, salt, and sand that all students were welcome to feel.  The students could also try on safety vests and hard hats at our ‘Newest Recruits’ dress-up station,” said Melissa Fetkenhier, Road Commission Communications-Permit Clerk.

In another area, students could have their picture taken by the bucket of a front-end loader, touch the tires that were taller than many of the students, and walk through the construction flags as they went to the final touch-a-truck stop: our tandem axle snowplow truck.  There the students could climb into the truck to blast the air horn.  “Overall, I’m not sure who walked away from the event feeling more gratitude, our crew or the students,” said Fetkenhier.

If your organization is interested in scheduling an outreach event, please call 269-674-8011.  The event can be held either at your facility, or at the Road Commission where kids can check out our gigantic piles of sand and salt, and see our mechanic’s area, garage, trucks, and equipment.
