A major $3.1-million project on the US-31 highway bridge over US-12 between Niles and Buchanan is getting underway, and it could disrupt some traffic with ramp closures and detours in place at times. That’s the word from the Michigan Department of Transportation today.
MDOT says work is starting on bridge repairs this week in the $3.1-million investment which includes repaving, joint replacement, pin and hanger replacement, painting, steel repair, concrete surface coating, curb and gutter, drainage, guardrail replacement, and new pavement markings.
Construction on the bridge will include nighttime and weekend work. One lane of US-31 and US-12 will remain open in each direction throughout the construction period, however, there will be some ramp closures, and traffic will be detoured.
Completion on the bridge project is slated for Saturday, August 15th. The project is designed to improve the ride quality for motorists and extend the service life of the bridge.
MDOT says this road construction project is an essential function, and transportation workers in the field are encouraged to follow Centers for Disease Control guidelines to limit their risk of getting sick.
