Unity Walk planned to celebrate monuments project in Benton Harbor, St. Joseph

The Unified Civic Monuments Project, which is building monuments to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., is planning a Unity Walk for May 21. Organizers of the walk say it will be the first in a series to be held every third Sunday throughout the summer as the installation of the monuments gets close. The walk will go from Dwight Pete Mitchell City Center Park in Benton Harbor to Margaret B. Upton Arboretum in St. Joseph, the sites of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. monuments scheduled to be unveiled next summer. It will take place from 3 to 5 p.m. with light refreshments and a return shuttle offered to take people back to Benton Harbor from St. Joseph. The Unified Civic Monuments Project has raised 63% of its $850,000 goal to design and install monuments honoring Dr. King in Benton Harbor and St. Joseph. The designs have been approved and can be viewed online. The walk is to build connections between people, just as the monument is intended.
