Even those who haven’t availed themselves of the opportunity to join United Federal Credit Union in the South Bend/Mishawaka marketplace have been increasingly exposed to the United Federal brand through their marketing campaigns with the South Bend Cubs and other entities, but an aggressive new movement announced today will spike awareness considerably when the St. Joseph-based credit union punches up the market with half a dozen new branches over the next three years.
United Federal President & CEO Terry O’Rourke announced today a dramatic expansion plan into St. Joseph County, Indiana as his team has completed the purchase of two properties in that area and the intent to seek four more sites on which they will construct new branches in the next 36-months.
The purchased properties are located at the southeast corner of Main Street and Edison Lakes Parkway in Mishawaka, and at the northeast corner of Ireland Road and Lafayette Boulevard in South Bend. Once the required approvals and permits have been secured, the credit union will begin constructing branches on those sites.
In making today’s historic announcement, O’Rourke said, “We already have a strong presence in the South Bend/Mishawaka area with many loyal members living and working in the community.” However, he adds, “These six new locations will make it easier to deliver the United Federal Credit Union experience to them. And, we hope to attract new members so they can take advantage of the benefits of our credit union.”
The mayors of both South Bend and Mishawaka view the move as evidence of a healthy local business climate.
South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg says, “United Federal Credit Union’s expansion is another sign that doing business in South Bend is a wise investment.” He adds, “This growth means more jobs, more possibilities for small businesses, and more opportunities for residents.”
Meanwhile, Mishawaka Mayor David Wood says, “The City of Mishawaka is pleased to welcome United Federal Credit Union to the Princess City.” He adds, “I am proud that the city continues to prosper, grow, and provide a positive business climate to new businesses moving into our city”.
UFCU’s influence on the area is already evident through support of community events, and business lending.
The credit union recently served as presenting sponsor of Best Week Ever, and the Venue Parks & Arts Kids Triathlon, both in South Bend.
UFCU is also one of three partnering financial institutions who provided $22.9 million in financing for the rehabilitation of the former Studebaker complex on the southern edge of downtown South Bend near Four Winds Field. That project, which is currently underway, will convert three formerly vacant buildings into a center of innovation with space for manufacturing, technology firms, business incubators, training and education.
United’s O’Rourke says, “Although we are headquartered in Berrien County, we have been a part of the Michiana region for more than 65 years. We believe it’s important to strengthen the communities we serve.”
UFCU formally entered the South Bend market area by opening a lending office in February at 1241 E. University Drive in Granger. That lending office and the two new branches will bring about 20 new jobs to the area.
More than 100 temporary construction jobs will be created for the two building projects. The Redmond Company will serve as general contractor.
United Federal Credit Union has served its members since 1949 by helping them to build a sound financial future. The credit union sports more than 150,000 member/owners worldwide, and manages assets in excess of $2 billion. Its corporate offices and main branch are located in St. Joseph with additional branches in Arkansas, Indiana, Michigan, North Carolina, Nevada, and Ohio.
