Two Berrien County townships considering options for better fire services

A meeting will be held next week for Lake Township and Lincoln Township officials to learn about the possibility of consolidating their fire departments. Lincoln Township Supervisor Dick Stauffer tells us the two are looking at how they can continue providing reliable fire services to their residents when it’s become a challenge to have enough staff.

“The fire departments have changed so much over the years,” Stauffer said. “The training requirements are immense, and the people sometimes have other activities going on. So, we’ve had challenges there in getting our firefighters all to respond at one time.”

Stauffer says accounting firm Plante Moran has prepared a presentation on some of the options for the townships.

“That’s what we want to present to our boards, some of the options that Plante and Moran can reveal here.”

Any decision to formally hire Plante Moran for a closer look will have to be made by the township boards after next week’s meeting. It will be next Thursday at the Lake Township Hall starting at 7 p.m. Stauffer says they want to hear from the public.
