The South Haven Theatre Series announces its fourth and final performance of 2022 with Dennis Elkins’ “Box” on Saturday, Sept. 24 beginning at 7:30 p.m. in Listiak Auditorium of South Haven High School, 600 Elkenburg Street.
Tickets can be purchased at the door or online at southhaventheatreseries.org
Writer/actor Dennis Elkins weaves the story of his hum-drum existence
through escapades of hilarity and heartache in this one-man show. Elkins
questions all the things we keep stored away in boxes and can’t throw away.
Autobiographical in nature, “box” has been seven years in the making and
was triggered by the untimely death of Elkins’ son, Isaac. The young man’s
cremains were delivered to Elkins in a box, and it was that shattering experience
which ultimately led to the writing and performing of this theatrical piece.
Elkins premiered “box.” in Savannah, Georgia, took it to his hometown in Kansas; then
Seattle; Nashville, Tennessee; Cape Town, South Africa; Pagosa Springs,
Colorado; and last fall in New York City as part of the United Solo Festival.
Elkins’ resume includes performances at the Scotland’s Edinburgh Fringe
Festival, Colorado Shakespeare Festival, Utah Shakespeare Festival. He has also developed and performed other one-man shows of Poe’s “Never Bet the Devil Your Head”, “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe”, and “Tipping the Glass, an Evening with O. Henry”.
“Box” is an autobiographical journey of cleaning house after parents/children die and we,
those of us who are left, must choose what to keep and what to shred. The easy
solution is to dump the stuff in a box and deal with it later—but, when “later”
comes, we still agonize with the left-overs in a comical way. (Durango Herald)
