This is a week where we honor emergency workers, tow truck drivers and Michigan Department of Transportation courtesy van patrol drivers as part of National Crash Responder Safety Week. It’s a dangerous job, especially over the past couple days where slick roads had people spinning out and crashing. Diane Cross with MDOT says drivers are putting crash responders at risk.
“The folks who are out there trying to help other people are having to deal with people who aren’t paying any attention to them, which we have so many crashes and unfortunately people, tow truck drivers, police, freeway courtesy patrol and others who have been killed on the roadway, because they were off on the side trying to help somebody else.”
Cross urges drivers to be aware of their surroundings. If you see an accident or construction, move over a lane and reduce your speed.
