Sunday’s storms cause business interruptions in SW Michigan

Indiana Michigan Power reported more than 40,000 customers were still without power Monday morning  after severe thunderstorms blew through Southwest Michigan. According to I&M, a large number of homes and businesses are expected to be without power at least through midweek.

Among the businesses affected, Thistledown & Row in downtown Buchanan who posted about the damage on social media.

“We, like many people, were affected by the 80 mph gusts that tore through our area. Unfortunately this caused the roof of our building to come off and water to start seeping in.”

The business is located at 103 Days Avenue in Buchanan providing crafted cuisine, ciders, and wines.

“It was all hands on deck last night as we, the Rowland Property Group, and volunteers tried to limit the damage and clean up the leaking water, made more difficult by the lack of power in Downtown Buchanan. This is a developing situation, and we hope to have more updates soon on what this will mean for Thistledown & Row in the near term. For now follow us for updates and keep us and our town in your thoughts.”

Coincidentally, St. Julien Winery in Paw Paw also had part of their roof blown off. Emergency crews responded and no injuries were reported.

In Kalamazoo County, three people were killed and three more injured when a tree hit a car. In Muskegon County, high winds blew the roof off of an elementary school in the Fruitport School District. There were also reports of damage near the Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Cascade Township.
