Stream Bank Erosion Forces Road Closure in Harbor Country

The ongoing impact of heavy rains, soggy grounds, and decidedly un-winterlike weather for the most part has forced closure of a road in Harbor Country this morning.

Berrien County Road Department Traffic Safety Supervisor Michael Juengling says that due to stream bank erosion occurring near Lubke Road, east of US-12, in New Buffalo Township, that road has been closed until further notice.

Juengling says, “We are working with the State environmental department in coming up with a quick solution to stabilize the situation so that we do not lose the road,” and adds, “This may involve installing some kind of steel sheeting.”

As a result of the road closure, traffic will have to detour down Wilson Road to Stromer Road to Sand Road. Juengling notes that a detour will NOT be posted unless they know that repairs cannot be made quickly.

Any specific question about the project should be directed to the Berrien County Road Department Engineer, Kevin Stack, who can be reached at kstack@bcroad.org or at 269-925-1196 ext. 4421.
