Straight-Line Storm Winds Demolish Marina Island Construction Site in St. Joe

Tuesday night’s extreme weather caused more than just power outages to the local community. The Marina Island construction site of the future Ultimate Storage facility was hit by straight-line winds upwards of 60-miles per hour, causing severe damage to the first of several buildings that are slated to be built there.

Developers tells us that around 6:30pm last night, Tuesday, June 9th, the severe storm sweeping across the region of Michigan’s Great Southwest literally collapsed the structure, causing severe damage to the project under construction.

The luxury storage company that designed the concept and is erecting the luxury garage complex on the island between the St. Joseph River proper and the Morrison Channel is currently working with Williams Buildings, the insurance company and the city of St. Joseph to start clean-up and get construction underway once again.

Daniel Crist, co-owner of Ultimate Storage, says, “As disappointed as we feel about what has happened due to an act of nature, we are thankful no one was working at the time and no one was hurt.”

Williams Buildings has assured Ultimate Storage that their team will be on site in full force to get construction up and moving as soon as possible.

The $3.25-million development which will feature 23 luxury garage suites over 1.75 acres with convenient access to Lake Michigan and the St. Joseph River, is right in the center of a cluster of five local marinas including Anchors Way Marina, Brians Marina, Pier 33, Pier 1000 and Island Pointe Marina.

When construction began last fall, the first structure had originally been targeted for completion this month, but that timeline was also derailed by the mandated shutdowns forced by the coronavirus pandemic.
