Michigan State Police have got their eyes on commercial vehicles on I-94 this week. State police are teaming up with their counterparts in Indiana and Illinois for Eyes on 94 all week, an annual enforcement period. Sergeant Nick Asmus with the Niles post tells us they’re watching semis for common violations because when a semi crashes, it causes a lot of damage.
“Our goal is to target the violations that are unsafe, that typically cause those types of incidents, like distracted driving, following to close, improper passing, speed, improper lane use, things like that,” Asmus said.
Asmus says distracted driving is a concern due to the amount of space a semi needs to stop. The MSP Eyes on 94 initiative also watches other commercial vehicles. Troopers will be at the New Buffalo weigh station all week offering information to drivers of both trucks and passenger vehicles. State police say the coordinated operation is an effort to increase awareness by means of high visibility on a road that’s prone to weather-related crashes involving interstate trucks this time of year.
