Governor Gretchen Whitmer and the Michigan Community Service Commission have announced the 38 individuals, businesses, and non-profits who will be honored at the 2024 Governor’s Service Awards for their commitment to volunteerism, service, or philanthropy next month, and among the honorees are some Southwest Michigan residents.
The governor’s office says the Youth Volunteer of the Year Award is going to six young people from around the state, including Lauren Mroczek of Mattawan. Also, the Volunteer of the Year Award is being given to five Michiganders, including Bernice Mason of St. Joseph.
Lauren started Growing Gardens for Growing Minds to increase access to fresh fruits and vegetables among those lacking access.
Bernice has been helping people from all walks of life in the Benton Harbor and St. Joseph communities for more than 50 years, volunteering with the Salvation Army, Toys for Tots, and Partners in Advancement of Learning in Schools at Benton Harbor Area Schools.
Additionally, the Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy, which maintains land preserves throughout Southwest Michigan, is being honored with a Community Impact Award.
The Governor’s Service Awards will be November 14 at the Detroit Opera House. The awards have been presented each year since 1994.
