The St. Joseph Township Board of Trustees has approved an agreement with Lincoln Township over the use of the Maiden Lane sewer line.

The two have been sparring over Lincoln Township’s use of the St. Joseph Township-owned line for years. St. Joseph Township says Lincoln should have to pay to use it.

At a workshop of the St. Joseph Township Board on Monday, trustees approved a mediator proposal that may settle the matter. According to St. Joseph Township Manager Denise Cook, the deal “does not make SJCT whole and that substantial financial concessions are being made in approving this document.” However, she says the board feels this is the wisest use of taxpayer dollars because its framework allows for the legal fees to subside and for Lincoln Township to start making regular, ongoing payments for the use of the sewer line.

The exact details of the agreement haven’t yet been released. The Lincoln Township Board of Trustees is expected to consider the proposal Tuesday.

Cook says, “Our board is hopeful that LCT’s Board will approve the proposal, allowing the two townships to move forward and work together as neighboring communities.”

The two will release a joint statement once both sides have formally signed on to the new agreement.
