A meeting will be held at St. Joseph City hall today Wednesday to discuss possible solutions to flooding along Anchors Way.

The city engineering department says flooding on the island has been an ongoing problem, and it’s been investigating solutions.

The city was awarded a state grant of $144,000 last year to study the problem and has since determined the cause of the flooding to be a limited storm sewer system, a high groundwater table, high Lake Michigan levels, winds off the lake, and the fact that the area is entirely in a floodplain.

Possible solutions to the flooding include a new pump station or elevating the road. The first option would come at a price tag of about $1.4 million, while the second would be about $1.5 million.

Wednesday’s meeting will be a chance for residents to learn more and express their thoughts. The next step will be for the city to finalize a design to deal with the flooding. The meeting will be from 6 to 7 p.m. at city hall.
