The 2022 Kitchenaid Senior PGA championship is less than a month away and St. Joseph City Commissioners got a preview Monday night. Championship Director Brandon Haney told them the event will attract what he believes is the best field of golfers yet. Haney said there will be activities for the whole community around St. Joseph and Benton Harbor while the action is underway.
“We’re happy to be partnering with the YMCA again and the Curious Kids Museum to bring back the Kids Zone,” Haney said. “We’ll have that our at Jean Klock Park on Saturday and Sunday of our championship. YMCA staff will be running that again and also bringing out the Curious Kids Museum. They’re going to be running their STEM Zone for all the kids.”
Haney said economic impact studies have shown the championship means $7 million to $8 million for the communities each year the event is held.
“This year’s championship will be broadcast for 12 and a half hours of live broadcasts on both the Golf Channel and NBC to 179 different countries and territories. We couldn’t be more excited to be spotlighting our communities to the world.”
Haney noted Harbor Shores was advertised during a previous Senior PGA championship, the phones at the golf course started ringing off the hook. Commissioners were also given a preview of the free community concert that will be held in Benton Harbor and invited to attend. The event will be at Dwight P. Mitchell City Center Park in Benton Harbor on May 26 featuring Stephanie Mills starting at 7 p.m. Food trucks will also be on site.
