The Rotary Club of South Haven has announced six recipients of Rotary Club Scholarships this year.
Rotary Scholarship Committee Chair, and retired South Haven High School Principal, Dene Hadden tells us the club has increased the number of scholarships it gives out.
“We have awarded four the past few years, but last year as we looked over the applicants and the number of applicants that we had, we determined that there’s enough need out there for more scholarships,” Hadden said. “So the club agreed to add two more scholarships, and we now have six for $1,000 each.”
Hadden says all six recipients are South Haven High School graduates. They were selected out of nearly 50 applicants.
“We review their academic credentials, their activities that they have been part of, and of course Rotary’s motto is ‘Service above Self.’ So we’re always looking for students who spend time volunteering, and volunteering for good causes in the community. And of course we also look for our four-way test, which is basically a test of honesty and integrity.”
Hadden says the recipients include Kelsey Hodgman, a student with a high GPA, Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award winner, and South Haven High School Critical Cup winner. She’ll be heading to Butler University in the fall.
