Thanks to the mild winter and aggressive scheduling coupled with the ongoing drive to get the job done, South Haven’s $3-million Center Street makeover is nearing completion and should be on schedule for its Memorial Day Weekend debut.
Project Engineer Corey Kandow from Benton Harbor-based Abonmarche reported this morning to South Haven City Manager Brian Disssette that things are humming along.
Kandow says that the Center Street reconstruction project has made great strides of late, noting that, “Over the past week, progress has continued on many of our streetscape amenities. These items include things like precast seating blocks, benches, bike racks, and trash receptacles. New trees and tree grates have also been installed. Adjacent street approaches were paved back in with asphalt, and the remaining brick pavers were installed. Overall project cleanup efforts will continue along the project length during the remainder of this week and into next week.”
Here at midweek, streetscape amenities will continue to be installed along the job site. Tomorrow, Thursday, May 14th, PK Contracting will be on-site to place the new pavement markings, weather pending. Permanent signage will also be installed over the next several days. Next week, Fence Consultants will be on-site to install ornamental fencing, and landscaping by NERC should wrap up late in the week according to Kandow.
Over the past couple of weeks, progress has continued on the live-wall structure alongside Chemical Bank, as well as in landscape planter beds, and free standing screen walls. Side street approaches were also prepared for last week’s asphalt paving, and the project also saw the delivery of many of the site amenities including benches and trash receptacles. Plain and decorative concrete sidewalk work, and associated cleanup, has also continued along the project length.
Kandow tells the City Manager, “If all goes according to plan, we are anticipating reopening the street on Friday, May 22nd!” Stay tuned.
