The time for fresh Michigan blueberries is here and that also means the National Blueberry Festival in South Haven is just around the corner. According to Michigan State University, in a good year, Michigan produces around 100-million pounds of blueberries, making it the number one blueberry-producing state in the nation. Van Buren County is among the most prolific producers of the tasty fruit, and home to the National Blueberry Festival. Jennifer Sistrunk, Executive Director for the South Haven and Van Buren County Visitors Bureau, says there’s activities for all ages, including children…
“Of course, my favorite is the pie eating contest, which is a big hit with the kids but is also fun for the adults,” Sistrunk said. “There’s the Bobby Walker Basketball Tournament at Elkenburg Park. So, there’s just things going on everywhere.”
Events take place throughout South Haven. It starts August 10 with the crowning of the Little Miss and Mr. Blueberry Festival and continues through August 13. For more information, look at blueberryfestival.com
