With an ever increasing number of corporate and commercial airline pilots stepping into retirement these days, a career in aviation could become more lucrative all the time, and the excitement involved in the options can be great. With that in mind, South Bend International Airport is hosting its 2nd Annual Aviation Education Day this weekend, and the public is invited.
South Bend International will host their second Aviation Education Day tomorrow, Saturday, October 26th, 2019 from 8:00 am until 2:00 pm on the north side of the airfield. It’s a free event, and is open to the public of all ages with a particular target of young Scouts aged from 11-17.
The six hour event features:
- Aircraft displays
- Airfield tours
- Airport equipment showcases
- Interactive presentations
Scouts who get involved in the showcase event will earn an Aviation Merit Badge for attending and completing all the requirements, and weather permitting, the airfield will also feature Young Eagle flights. Keep in mind that those flights have limited availability.
The event is slated to take place on the north side of the airfield, opposite the passenger terminal. Parking is available near the corner of Lathrop Drive and Corporate Drive by the Air Traffic Control Tower. Gates will open at 7:00 am for check-in.
The On the Money BBQ food truck will be on site from 10am-2pm for those interested in purchasing lunch during the show.
Tim O’Donnell, AAE, is Vice President of Operations for South Bend International Airport. He says, “Learning about aviation is intriguing for people of all ages,” and adds, “It satisfies a curiosity associated with an industry that people rely so heavily on.” He and his colleagues hope to see a large contingent of folks to check out the options and potential career opportunities.
