SMC’s Roadrunner Ready Designed for College Success

This summer’s Roadrunner Ready program will help Southwestern Michigan College students hit the ground running.

A free five-week program designed for college success, Roadrunner Ready takes place July 10-Aug. 10 on SMC’s Dowagiac campus from 8:15 a.m. until noon Monday through Thursday.

Roadrunner Ready combines extra help in math and English with an in-depth introduction to SMC academic resources to jump-start participants’ college success.

Participants receive up to a $1,000 scholarship for the Fall 2023 semester upon completion, as well as possible placement in college-level or corequisite courses, eligibility for free computer rental throughout your time as an SMC student, transportation support (a $150 gas card for on-campus participants), free materials, free on-campus student support workshops, free breakfast on campus each morning of the camp and free on-campus afternoon activities (attendance optional, but it’s a great way to get a taste of life as a Roadrunner).

“Our main goal is to help students who have COVID gaps,” Dean of Student Development Dr. Katie Hannah said. “It’s intended for high school students who may have lost some skill in their reading and writing over COVID. This program tries to help those students catch up and be ready to go for their first semester.

“Or, it could be a student who took a gap year or an adult returning after a long time away unrelated to COVID. It is open to any student who has graduated high school or who has a GED and is coming for Fall 2023. We have some hybrid options available.”

SMC is purchasing 30 laptops for Roadrunner Ready.

“Students will be able to take them home all five weeks,” Hannah said. “After that, we’ll put them into IT’s loaner system, so any student can benefit from them. Students in the program will have priority to use that computer throughout their time at SMC.”

“Every day, after breakfast, students will do their instructional session from 9-11,” she said. “Monday/Wednesday, math; Tuesday/Thursday, reading. At 11 o’clock, Student Affairs will do other things students need to transition to college and to be successful — tutoring and how to access the center, career exploration, advising, financial aid. It’s a more in-depth conversation than orientation, so once they’re here in the fall they feel comfortable and confident because they already know us and how to access any campus resource.”
