It’s a busy time on campus at Southwestern Michigan College as SMC brings back athletics. The college last year brought back cross country, and then in May of this year, the board of trustees authorized the revival of men’s basketball, women’s basketball, volleyball, and wrestling for the fall of 2022. Rodell Davis Sr. has been hired as athletic director and head coach of men’s basketball, and tells WSJM News he’s building a team now.
“We’re excited about it and we’re really at the point now where we’re going to start building our program and continue to hit the recruiting trail really hard,” Davis said.
Davis says having athletics back at SMC will attract more students.
“SMC has a lot to offer here, and they want the total student experience for students, and I believe that athletics is a part of that. I think it’s going to reenergize the campus and it’s going to bring a lot of excitement.”
SMC has hired Jeanine Wasielewski as its women’s basketball coach, and Davis says they’re recruiting coaches for volleyball and wrestling now. He says SMC President Joe Odenwald is “on fire” about the return of sports, and the community is showing a lot of support.
