An 18-year old college student at Southwestern Michigan College was arrested late this morning after reportedly trying to kill herself, stabbing a fellow dorm resident in the scuffle that ensued. Dowagiac Police say they were called out around 11:25 this morning to a dormitory on the Dowagiac campus and were met by a 20 year old man who had been cut by the woman in the heat of an argument when she tried to stab herself.
The incident at McKenzie Hall on the campus only involved the two dorm residents, according to police, and no other students or staff were injured or in danger at any time during the argument between the two. The man was apparently cut while trying to keep the woman from doing harm to herself, and trying to get the knife away from her. Police say the two have been in a relationship with one another. They are both originally from Kalamazoo.
The man sustained non-life threatening wounds and was attended to by Pride Ambulance personnel. He was transported to Borgess/Lee Memorial Hospital where he was treated and released.
Officers then located the woman in the dorm room and took her into custody. She was transported to Borgess/Lee Memorial Hospital where she was evaluated and released, and later charged with Assault with a Dangerous Weapon and Aggravated Domestic Violence. She has been lodged in the Cass County Jail pending authorization of charges from the Cass County Prosecutor’s Office. Her name is being withheld pending arraignment in Cass County 4th District Court.
Dowagiac Police were assisted at the scene by Deputies from the Cass County Sheriff’s Office and Officers with the Pokagon Tribal Police Department. Staff from SMC were also present to assist officers while at the scene.
