A St. Joseph native and 2016 SJHS graduate, Alex Heugel, has won the nationwide TV cooking competition ‘America’s Test Kitchen: Next Generation’ Season 2.

Heugel was revealed as the winner on the series season finale this month, in competition with ten other aspiring chefs from across the nation.  Heugel teaches cooking classes at Chicago’s highly acclaimed “Chopping Block”.

He will become a cast member on the PBS show ‘America’s Test Kitchen’, win a $100,000 cash award and be eligible to publish his own cookbook in conjunction with ATK.

St. Joseph High School Culinary Arts Instructor  Lauri Berry praised Heugel in an email to SJHS boosters:  “I am so proud of him!  He graduated from Kendall College School of Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management.  He is wicked smart and has the heart of an educator so winning this competition is the perfect marriage of the two.”

Heugel grew up in a formidable kitchen environment:  his mother, Amy Bleich Heugel, is the former owner of the Lake House Restaurant.
