There is plenty more room to roam at Silver Beach now that the dredging projects have been completed in the St. Joseph harbor. The excess sand dredged from the outer harbor last week allowed for Silver Beach to be extended south almost to the beach at Lions Park.
Residents and visitors enjoyed the extended beach throughout Labor Day weekend, taking longer walks and setting up for a relaxing day in some new, more secluded areas of the beach.
The placement of the sand was accomplished through cooperation with King Company, the Corps of Engineers, the City of St. Joseph and the Berrien County Parks Department. All of those stakeholders met at the beginning of the project to decide where to place the sand for the maximum benefit, according to St. Joseph Harbormaster Michael Moran.
Every year, the harbor is dredged to allow for commercial ships to safely navigate the harbor. King Company is headed up to South Haven next for a harbor dredging and South Beach restoration project.
