Shady Creek Winery Announces $2.5-M Expansion Plan

Recognizing the strong demand for their wines, the new owners of Shady Creek Winery between New Buffalo and Michigan City have announced a major expansion project in which they will invest $2.5-million dollars. That word this morning from Economic Development Corporation Michigan City.

The Schwartz Family recently purchased Shady Creek Winery, intending to build on the Anderson Family’s success as previous owners. They say, “Adding capacity to the successful winery destination in Northwest Indiana was the only next step. After acquiring the winery this year, we saw how coveted our wines were and decided to step up the capacity to the next level.”

Shady Creek has been awarded by TripAdvisor and more recently, in 2019 they were awarded for four wines at the Indy International competition. Shady Creek Winery ships directly to consumers in 37 states nationwide. Visitors and out-of-state customers now have easy access to all their favorite award-winning wines any time of the year.

Economic Development Corporation Michigan City Executive Director Clarence Hulse says, “This was a fun company to work with, the owners have a vision to put Michigan City on the map for wine in the Southwest Michigan, Northwest Indiana corridor.”

The project will create a production facility capable of fermenting close to 15,000 gallons of wine compared to the current capacity of 2,000 gallons, a barrel room capable of aging 8,280 gallons of wine, compared to 420 gallons currently, and a storage facility capable of housing 100 pallets of wine. In addition, they will be adding multiple new roles to help facilitate an expanded retail footprint, dramatically increased seating space, and the development of new business lines.

Located at 2030 Tryon Road on the northeastern side of Michigan City, the winery features custom crafted wines and a first-class facility situated on nearly 20 acres of grounds with expansive views, comfortable patios, covered porches, fireplaces, tasting room, specialty foods, gifts and local artwork.
