Sawyer’s Molino Tortilleria closes retail and online sales

Molino Tortilleria & Market  in Sawyer is exiting the retail and online operation that has been a growing part of its business during the pandemic.  Owners put out a detailed and seemingly heartfelt statement Monday describing their situation and their plans for the future of their products.

“We have decided to make the difficult decision to permanently close our retail space and online ordering to refocus the company’s energy. This decision was not made lightly and we understand that it might not be welcome news . The staffing shortage and our limited financial resources have forced us to reconsider what are the most essential parts of our business and unfortunately, that means ending our current retail experience at Molino in Sawyer MI.  We are shifting our focus to building up our wholesale clients and expanding Molino as a great local food brand. We want you to have greater access to our products and now realize local retail partnerships are the most effective way to do so.
Our retail space and the creation of MolinoMarket.com were not a part of our original vision as a business believe it or not. The events of 2020 forced us to evolve in some wild ways as we searched for ways to keep our newly open business afloat and find a way to serve our community in their time of need. It seems like a lifetime ago now. What started as a small grocery delivery program quickly grew to what became Molino Market and we are really proud of the work we have done as a team. Unfortunately, to execute this at the level we feel necessary takes resources and capital we just don’t have right now.
It was truly our honor to be able to serve our community and we so much appreciated all of the support and love you have shown us ❤️.  We hope we were able to bring some joy to everyone we served in a time of such uncertainty. This experience is something we’ll never forget!
Now, the good news! We are working with partners to bring Molino’s product to local shelves. Starting Thursday this week you’ll be able to find our tortillas at Alex’s Veggies in Stevensville MI (Open 7 days a week!) and we will be returning to Chicago Farmers Markets this Sunday 8/22 at The Logan Square Farmers Market. We’re even planning some fun pop-ups with some of our favorite local food makers!
We are actively looking for more local partners to carry our products and look forward to announcing more soon! Stay tuned!”
