Resource Fair connects Benton Harbor residents with home lead inspections

The state continues to hold Community Resource Fairs in Benton Harbor for residents to learn about how they can keep themselves safe from lead in their homes. More than 100 people attended a fair Tuesday at the Virginia Edwards Community Center. Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy spokesperson Scott Dean told us although most of the lead water service lines in town have been replaced, there is still help available for residents.

“Everything from bottled water to filters to the all-important home inspection,” Dean said. “These free inspections will really help folks have confidence that their interior plumbing is safe, and if it’s not, there are resources available to help remove some of that historic lead plumbing from inside the house.”

Dean said people should still have their homes inspected for lead. The state will provide that. All a resident has to do is sign up at Michigan.gov/MILeadSafe. There are also programs to pay to have lead removed if it’s found. There are plans to hold additional resource fairs.
