Berrien RESA is planning a public hearing for anyone to learn about the process for school districts to apply for a waiver to a state rule requiring the school year to start before Labor Day. Many communities in tourist areas prefer a post Labor Day start.
RESA told us more:
On Wednesday, May 10 at 5 p.m., Berrien RESA will host a public hearing with the Michigan Department of Education
(MDE) and other local school districts to discuss and review the county’s application requesting approval for a pre-Labor Day
start waiver.
The three-year waiver requests the exemption for all Berrien County school districts and academies to begin the school year
before Labor Day. If approved, individual school districts will have an opportunity to opt out of participation in the waiver.
The required hearing will be held at the Berrien RESA Administrative Conference Center located at 711 St. Joseph
Avenue in Berrien Springs. Area superintendents will share a brief presentation followed by an opportunity for community
members to provide comments and ask questions. A staff member from MDE will participate remotely.
