A new report out Wednesday shows Michigan will need a few billion dollars more to adequately fund public schools in the state. Researcher Tanner Delpier from the Education Law Center said the report shows 90% of Michigan school districts are underfunded at some level.
“To fully close this adequacy gap estimated in our report would take $4.5 billion above funding in Fiscal Year 2021,” Delpier said. “These funds would go to support all of the school resources listed earlier, including universal pre-school for four-year-olds.”
Delpier says the study shows three out of every four Michigan public school students attend schools that are more than $2,000 per student below adequacy. Those involved in the research are encouraging state leaders to come up with a new funding source to help schools.
