Coming up on July 13 is the annual Summer Heater Doubles Disc Golf Tournament at Madeline Bertrand County Park in Niles.

Park Assistant Manager Kate Blanchard tells us they’ve held disc golf tournaments there since the 1980s, but as the sport has become more popular, the events really fill up. Available for July is space for 45 doubles teams.

Blanchard expects the day to be busy.

“We have a lot of local people,” Blanchard said. “In the past couple of years, we have seen some more new faces, and we also do see a couple of people from quite some distance. I remember last year there was somebody who came up from Tennessee.”

Blanchard says the shorter, unique course at Madeline Bertrand attracts many who want to improve their skills because it’s more skill-based than power-based. She’s expecting a fun tournament.

“A lot of people know each other. The disc golf community is just great. They’re really friendly and supportive of each other and their courses and their park so, it just has a really, really good atmosphere.”

Registrations are being taken now, and Blanchard says she expects a lot of slots to fill up in the coming days.

Lunch will be served as part of the tournament and trophies will be awarded to the top three teams in each division.
