Put down that phone: Police looking for distracted drivers on I-94 this week

There will be a heavy police presence on I-94 this Wednesday all across the state as sheriff’s departments, Michigan State Police, and local police departments look for distracted drivers.

MSP Lieutenant DuWayne Robinson tells us they’re targeting the highway all the way from New Buffalo to Port Huron to remind drivers of the state’s hands-free law, which bans using a cell phone while driving.

Has Robinson found a lot of people don’t know about the hands-free law?

“I think that a lot of people know about it, but I don’t think people are really taking it seriously,” Robinsons said. “We’re just used to our phones, used to answering that text or that phone call, and those desires supersede the law still amongst a lot of people.”

But Robinson says people using cell phones won’t be the only distracted drivers police will watch out for this week.

“This is also people that are eating behind the wheel, people putting on makeup, all kinds of things. Whatever it may be that’s taking your eyes off the road and your hands off the wheel.”

Robinson says the “Lake to Lake Traffic Initiative” is one of the largest combined campaigns among law enforcement in Michigan in a long time. It’s taken a great deal of coordination and cooperation for all of these agencies to make sure they’re on the road at the same time pulling over drivers and issuing tickets.

The initiative will run from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday.
