Police Seek Help Following Murder at Briarwood Apartment Complex

A pre-dawn argument at the Briarwood Apartment complex on Union Avenue in Benton Township has lead to the murder of one of the men involved in the altercation.

Detctive/Lt. Michael DenDooven of the Benton Charter Township Police Department reports that his department was called to the busy apartment complex just minutes after 4am this morning by people complaining of gunshots fired there.

When DenDooven’s colleagues arrived on the scene, they were told that two men had been arguing in the parking lot near 1869 Union Avenue and two or three shots had been fired.

Witnesses reported hearing one of the men say he had been shot, followed by several vehicles racing from the complex.

DenDooven says his department was advised that the man who had been shot twice in the chest, a 27 year old from Benton Township, was taken to the Emergency Room at Spectrum Health Lakeland in St. Joseph where life-saving measures were repeated to exhaustion and the man was pronounced dead.

The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department Evidence Technicians assisted in processing the crime scene at Briardwood, however, Benton Township Police say they have not located a suspect at this time, and no further information is available.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Benton Township Police Department Detective Bureau at (269) 925-1135 or Crime Stoppers at (574) 288-STOP.
