An evening argument at a Benton Township party store Tuesday night erupted into gunfire leaving one man shot and police seeking public help in identifying the shooter.
Benton Township Police Detective Lt. Michael DenDooven says that around 8pm last night his department was dispatched to a neighborhood near the Quik Way Party Store at 105 S. Fair Avenue regarding a shooting incident.
The Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety and the Township’s Evidence Technician Unit also responded to the neighborhood of Buss Avenue and South Fair after reports of someone wielding a gun. Shortly after arriving and finding no evidence, Spectrum Health Lakeland alerted them to a 22-year old Benton Harbor man who had been shot in the upper portion of his left leg.
The man told DenDooven’s officers that as he was departing Quik Way, he saw several people arguing and heard gunshots. As he got into his car to drive away, several gunshots struck his car and he realized he had been shot in the leg. He took himself to the hospital for treatment, where authorities identified the wounds were not life threatening and he would be treated and released.
When officers went to the Quik Way Party Store parking lot, they found shell casings as evidence of the shooting and the scene was processed by Evidence Technicians.
DenDooven says that Benton Township Police have not located a suspect at this time, and no further information is available, however they are asking that anyone with information please contact the Benton Township Police Department Detective Bureau (269) 925-1135 or Crime Stoppers (574) 288-STOP.
