Berrien County Sheriff Chuck Heit will be freezin’ for a reason this coming Saturday as he takes the polar plunge for the Special Olympics.
Heit tells us the annual Southwest Michigan Polar Plunge will be held at Watermark Brewing Company in downtown Stevensville starting at noon. He says the sheriff’s department will have a whole team there.
“The goal is $110,000 this year, and we’re hoping to go over that,” Heit said. “I know last year we exceeded any year previous. So, the polar plunge is an event of the Law Enforcement Torch Run, which benefits Special Olympics. So all proceeds go to Special Olympics Michigan…It’s a great cause and we’re happy to do it.”
You can make a donation in support of the sheriff’s department online or at the event.
Heit took the plunge last year, and we asked what it was like.
“The water’s cold, and obviously, when you get out, sometimes the air is, depending on the temperature, it can even feel a little colder. So looking at the weather, it looks like it is going to be above freezing so far with the extended forecast, but we’ll wait and see.”
The team from the sheriff’s department has already raised more than $7,000, while the overall Southwest Michigan Polar Plunge has already raised more than $62,000 of its $110,000 goal.
The Polar Plunge is the first event to be held in Stevensville’s new social district, so the village invites everyone to come down and have a good time.
