Southwest Michigan is getting one new Michigan State Police trooper now that a trooper recruit academy has graduated another class. Graduation for the 142nd Trooper Recruit School was Thursday in Lansing with Governor Gretchen Whitmer as the keynote speaker. The director of the Michigan State Police administered the oath of office to 59 recruits who begin their assignments at MSP posts across the state next week. Among them is Trooper Nickolas Agy of Allegan, who has been assigned to the Paw Paw post. The state police say the recruit academy started June 26 with 85 prospective troopers, at the MSP Training Academy in Lansing. Recruits received training in patrol techniques, report writing, ethics, cultural diversity and implicit bias, decision making, leadership, first aid, criminal law, crime scene processing, firearms, water safety, defensive tactics, and precision driving.
