Paw Paw Man Dies in Wednesday Afternoon Crash on Red Arrow Highway

A Paw Paw man died Wednesday afternoon when a semi pulled onto Red Arrow Highway from a private drive at the same time as he was attempting to pass another vehicle in Paw Paw Township.

Van Buren County Sheriff Daniel Abbott reports that his deputies were dispatched to a multiple vehicle crash in the 39000 block of Red Arrow Highway in Paw Paw Township, involving two automobiles and the semi.

A 57 year old man from Paw Paw, was traveling west bound on Red Arrow Highway and attempted to pass another west bound vehicle. Unfortunately, just as the passing maneuver began around 2:30 in the afternoon, the semi pulled out into the eastbound lane from a private drive, resulting in an angled head-on collision.

Deputy Paul Graham says the driver who died in the crash was found to be wearing his seatbelt at the time of the incident.

Red Arrow Highway had to be shut down for approximately three hours while accident reconstructionist Deputy Jason Erickson from the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office and the Michigan State Police worked the scene. Alcohol does not appear to be a contributing factor at this time.

Van Buren County Sheriff’s officers were assisted at the scene by Van Buren EMS, the Michigan State Police and crews from McDonald’s Towing.

The investigation remains open at this time.
