The Nuclear Regulatory Commission and Palisades Restart Panel will hold their second public meeting on the possible reopening of the Palisades nuclear power plant August 1 at Lake Michigan College.

The NRC says the meeting will include an update from the panel members on the plant’s readiness, as well as presentations from Holtec International on restart-related activities. The NRC’s Viktoria Mitlyng says the meeting will feature NRC representatives Holtec representatives speaking to the public.

“We committed to updating the public once a quarter on basically where we are in the review process and talk about our activities, what we have accomplished, what we are looking at,” Mitlyng said.

As part of their quarterly duty to report to the public, the NRC plans to discuss licensing reviews and inspections. Holtec International will cover current and planned activities for the potential plant restart.

Starting at 5:15, the NRC will first have an open house before the main presentations. Elected officials will also be present at the meeting to give  their statements.

The public meeting will officially begin at 6 p.m.
