The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will hold a meeting this coming week to discuss the performance of the Cook nuclear power plant in Bridgman. NRC spokesperson Prema Chandrathil tells us they’ll review the 2022 safety performance of the plant and be available to the public for questions.
“We have the NRC staff that are responsible for inspections and oversight and the resident inspectors who are based at the DC Cook plant available to answer questions, have discussions, address any concerns that members of the public may have and want to raise,” Chandrathil said.
Chandrathil says the NRC has determined that D.C. Cook operated safely during 2022. All inspection findings and performance indicators were green, or of very low safety significance. As a result, the plant remains under the NRC’s baseline level of oversight, which entails thousands of hours of inspection each year. Anyone can come to the NRC meeting on Thursday, July 13 at 3 p.m. to learn more and talk with the NRC. The meeting will be at the Silver Beach Carousel in St. Joseph and at least one hour. Chandrathil says they’ll have hands-on activities and information for families that attend.
