The Palisades Nuclear Power plant will need additional testing on its steam generator, according to Holtec’s latest inspection results.

Steam generators are large heat exchanges that transfer heat from the primary coolant system to the secondary plant systems. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s Viktoria Mitlyng tells us it’s been determined the steam generator tubes will need additional analysis and repair

“We’re talking about the walls of the tubes experiencing spinning, and so that condition is identified before there can be any kind of hole or crack,” Mitlyng said.

Due to the findings, the NRC will further inspect Holtec’s activities related to the generators over the next few months.

“After the condition is better understood and analyzed, the company is going to have to develop a repair plan. How are they going to deal with what other issues they discover and the extent of the issues they identify?”

Mitlyng says there is no impact on public health and the unit remains defueled. She says the NRC will continue to ensure appropriate actions are taken prior to the potential restart of Palisades.
