New park being planned in Chikaming Township

An event will be held next week to fill in the public on the effort to establish a new park in Chikaming Township and to begin raising funds for the project.

Chikaming Township Supervisor David Bunte tells us Kohn Park will be located right in the heart of Sawyer, at 5844 Sawyer Road, That’s the site of the former Sawyer Fire Station, which was torn down a few years ago. Residents Jerry and Bev Kohn had the dilapidated building demolished and then donated the parcel and one next to it to the township.

So, what’s planned for the future Kohn Park?

Renderings and with our landscape architect show it will be a lot of green space with native plantings,” Bunte said. “There’ll be a center gazebo area for some entertainment and just a covering, and then there’ll be a children’s music station area for children engagement and play. Also bike racks, a dog station, and a water refill station as well as pathways, incorporated benches, and seating for picnicking.”

Bunte says this will be a great place for the community to mingle and love living in Sawyer. He adds the township doesn’t currently have a space like it.

The fundraising kickoff is next Friday at 3 p.m. at the site of the future park. They’ll have plans to show off, along with refreshments. Bunte says the goal is to raise about $655,000 for Kohn Park, and already the township has applied for some grants.
