Just short of $42-million in federal funding is now in the pipeline for a dozen Michigan airports from Detroit to Iron Mountain and beyond.
Michigan’s U.S. Senators Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters have announced today that the U.S. Department of Transportation will be awarding $41,950,768 to 12 Michigan airports to go toward costs related to operations, personnel, cleaning, sanitization, janitorial services, and combating the spread of pathogens at those airports.
The grants range from more than $27-million at Detroit Metro, to $116,859 at Willow Run Airport at Ypsilanti. Senator Stabenow says, “These investments will make air travel safer and more reliable,” and adds, “It will help our communities rebound from the pandemic and encourage businesses to invest in the region and create jobs.”
Senator Peters says, “Now more than ever, it is critical that families and small businesses across Michigan have access to important destinations and marketplaces through safe, reliable air travel.” Peters, a member of the Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, adds, “I was proud to help enact this funding to help Michigan’s airports overcome COVID-related revenue shortfalls, retain staff and better protect traveler health and safety.”
