Perhaps it’s fortuitous that school returned today, and the rain is falling. It will certainly help keep people away from the waters of Lake Michigan where dangerous swim conditions are forecast for this afternoon and evening, especially along the shoreline of Berrien county.
That’s the word from the National Weather Service office in Northwest Indiana which posted a graphic warning regarding dangerous swimming conditions all along the Lake Michigan waterfront with special emphasis on Berrien County, where most beaches are likely to be pretty empty today anyway.
The National Weather Service says, “As winds shift to more west and northwest tonight into Wednesday, a high risk for dangerous swim conditions will settle in. Many of the beaches that had lifeguards over the summer are not staffed. Make sure to heed any warning flags or closure signs that are posted.”
Weather office officials say that dangerous currents and waves are likely, and everyone should steer clear of the piers where waves are frequently washing over the structures making the surface slippery at best, and larger waves can take a person down in a flash.
The forecast this evening also includes the potential for damaging winds, hail and frequent lightning. The most prime conditions for storm activity this evening are targeted between 6pm and 11pm.
