Michigan State University administrators have announced that classes have resumed for the nearly 50,000 students. The decision comes a week after a gunman went on a shooting rampage that left three students dead and five others hospitalized. MSU interim provost Thomas Jeitschko was asked why not wait until after Spring Break.
“We’ve tried to convey a little bit that us returning to classes and courses on Monday is not a resumption of normal operations,” Jeitschko said. “It is a coming together and making adjustments and allowances for that. An alternative of staying closed for two weeks would have met spring break. Then students would have been away in excess of four weeks in total.”
Jeitschko says experts have said bringing students back together is best. He says professors have been told to re-work their plans and make accommodations for students. Administrators say there are options available for students who don’t want to return or want to transfer. The two buildings where the shootings occurred, Berkey Hall and the MSU Student Union, remain closed. Some 300 classes have been moved to other locations on the MSU campus.
