MI State Police Plan Bike With a Cop Event in BH Next Week

Michigan State Police Special Lieutenant DuWayne Robinson is pumped. He’s the Public Information Officer for the State Police at Fifth District Headquarters in Paw Paw, and he and his colleagues are gearing up for a major community engagement event in Benton Harbor next week designed to strengthen their partnership with the Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety as they forge collective efforts to foster community and police relationships.

The event, hosted by both departments, is dubbed Bike With a Cop, and it’s slated for next Wednesday afternoon, August 26th, from 2pm to 4pm beginning and ending at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Benton Harbor’s Fettig Youth Campus at 600 Nate Wells Drive in Benton Harbor.

Robinson tells us that kids aged 5 to 12 and their parents are invited to ride their bikes with Michigan State Police Troopers and Officers from the Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety.

Officers will provide a brief bicycle safety lesson prior to the ride and bike mechanics will be on hand to assist in minor bike repairs along the route which is designated as follows:

  • Start on the south side of the parking lot at the Boys & Girls Clubs
  • Take Vineyard Street to S. Seeley
  • Left onto S. Seeley
  • Left on Buss Avenue
  • Right on S. McCord Street
  • Left on Thresher Avenue
  • Left on S. Hull Avenue
  • Left on E. High Street
  • Right on S. McCord
  • Right on Nate Wells Sr. Drive
  • End on the north end of the Boys & Girls Clubs parking lot

Robinson encourages all participants to use a proper bicycle helmet and promises that ice cream will be provided for all at the end of the bike ride. He is publicly thanking The Boys & Girls Clubs of Benton Harbor for their sponsorship as well as The Blue Roof Church for the ice cream donations and Cycle-Re-Cycle and the Michigan State Police for provided bike mechanics for incidental repairs.
