Gas station and convenience store owners, beer-wine-and-liquor store operators and other small businesses interested in full understanding of Michigan’s sales tax laws, filing processes and more are being offered several workshop seminars hosted by the Michigan Department of Treasury this month, with more to come later in the year.
The sales tax outreach seminars are being offered first in Grand Rapids and Detroit, but other sessions may be added later in the year depending on the demand. Designed by the Michigan Department of Treasury to provide insight for business owners and operators, it’s also a unique opportunity for Treasury to get feedback from those same small business enterprises.
The seminars are ideal for owners of gas stations, convenience stores, wine, beer and liquor stores or other small businesses. Treasury Outreach Team members will be providing an overview of the sales tax filing process, the ins and outs of auditing and how to appeal an audit decision, including dedicating a portion of the session to taxpayer questions and suggestions.
Glenn White is head of the Treasury Department’s Tax Administration Group. He tells us, “Treasury wants to listen and learn about the sales tax issues affecting Michigan’s small businesses.” He adds, “Small businesses can receive extra attention and help at these seminars. Taxpayers will gain valuable information and insight by attending.”
In June, the Treasury Outreach Team members will be visiting two locations:
- Grand Rapids Area – Thursday, June 8 from 10am to Noon at the Grand Rapids Public Library’s Ryerson Auditorium, located at 111 Library St. NE in Grand Rapids.
- Detroit Area – Wednesday, June 21 from 10am to Noon at Henry Ford College in the Andrew A. Mazzara Administrative Services and Conference Center located in Building L – Berry Auditorium at 5101 Evergreen Road in Dearborn.
Additional seminar sessions will be offered in Flint, Kalamazoo, Lansing and other cities throughout the year.
Treasury is looking for other topic suggestions and locations for future outreach seminars, and suggestions should be directed to TreasuryOutreach@michigan.gov.
