MI Dept of Education Grant Helps Fund YMCA Summer Day Camps in SW Michigan

Summer day camps in Michigan’s Great Southwest picked up a nice boost today when the YMCA of Greater Michiana learned that they have been awarded $96,749 through the Michigan Alliance of YMCAs from the Michigan Department of Education to provide summer learning opportunities for children in summer programs. Specifically, the funds have been awarded to Gla-Da-Wen-Ta Day Camp…Summer Rec…and Benton Harbor Summer Impact day camp programs.

Mark Weber, YMCA of Greater Michiana Chief Executive Officer, says, “YMCA summer learning programs at the Y keep Michigan’s youth safe, healthy, and ensure a successful return to school,” and adds, “We’re excited to partner with the Michigan Department of Education to provide kids a fun and educational summer.”

YMCAs throughout Michigan have joined together to deliver a coordinated program to support children, families, and schools while they recover from the pandemic and prepare for a successful return to the school year.

Dr. Zechariah Hoyt, YMCA of Greater Michiana Executive Director of Youth Programs, tells us, “The Y is prepared to work with schools to overcome the challenges facing students, families and communities,” and adds, “The Y is ready to meet the academic, social-emotional, physical, and nutritional needs of children and is committed to strong collaborations to improve the academic success and overall well-being of children.”

As always, the Y’s summer programs will focus on FUN, keeping kids safe, active, fed, and engaged with other children and adults. The support from the Michigan Department of Education allows the Y to offer traditional camp programs that are enhanced to address the unique academic needs created by the pandemic.
