MGU Offers Public Safety Grants Through Rewarding Responders Program

Recognizing amid the global pandemic that keeping the communities of our region safe is now perhaps more important than ever before, the team at Michigan Gas Utilities — MGU — is offering a helping hand to the everyday heroes who serve us around the clock in the realm of public safety.

MGU says that in order to help the men and women bravely take on those responsibilities every day, they are providing their Rewarding Responders Grant to support area first responders. Emergency response agencies operating in the MGU service area (as shown on the right) can apply for a grant from now through June 15th.

In 2019, MGU provided new equipment to three southern Michigan fire departments through the grant to assist them with improving safety in their communities.

MGU began offering the Rewarding Responders Grant in 2015 to support emergency response agencies in southern Michigan. Since that time, nearly $40,000 has been provided through the grant to help 20 agencies purchase equipment or training to improve public safety. Examples of equipment funded through the grants include firefighter turnout clothing, 911 emergency call simulators and a water rescue raft.

To be eligible for a grant, emergency response agencies must:

  • Operate in the MGU service area.
  • Complete an online grant application.
  • Demonstrate the equipment or training they wish to purchase is part of a well-planned effort to improve public safety. Grants also can be used for safety-related projects that are unique, one-time efforts.

Grants of up to $2,000 are available to each eligible department. Interested agencies can apply or learn more information at the link below:
