Drivers who are already tired of I-94 construction near the Benton Harbor Business Loop exit aren’t going to be happy with the timeline unveiled this week for a series of freeway updates from there South to Exit 23 at Red Arrow Highway. Ramps, bridges and roadways near five Twin Cities exits will be rebuilt. Preliminary work will start next year, with the bulk of the construction in 2023 and 2024.
– MDOT has produced a YouTube video explaining a planned three-year project to rebuild 11 miles of I-94 in Berrien County. (Click the link to view)
The entire eleven mile stretch of I-94 will be repaved, four bridges will be replaced and seven other bridges improved. MDOT says 63,000 cars a day travel that segment of road. They’ll add an extra lane between Pipestone Exit 29 and Napier Exit 30 to accommodate a frequent “jump on, jump off” traffic pattern there. And Car Pool Lots at several exits will be enlarged or improved.
This project, which is separate from the one now underway that will connect the US 31 Bypass with I-94, will cost almost $154 Million dollars. It’s part of Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s “Rebuild Michigan” highway bonding program, often dubbed “Fix the Damn Roads.”
The Michigan Department of Transportation is asking the public to submit any comments or concerns with the planned project using an online comment form, via e-mail, through postal mail, or by phone.
