MDOT Sets Up I-196 Repaving from I-94 to Hagar Shore Road in $15.7M Deal

Another major repaving project will have an impact on travelers along I-196 from I-94 to the Hagar Shore neighborhood beginning next week, and part of the multi-million dollar deal includes reconstruction of the M-63 bridge over I-196.

The Michigan Department of Transportation sent word this morning that teams will be repaving some 7-and-a-half miles of I-196 in Berrien County beginning next Monday, May 6th, and it will cause some disruption until Friday, November 15th, the expected end date for the $15.7-million project.

The repaving of I-196 will run from I-94 to M-63/Hagar Shore Road at Exit 7. In addition to repaving, the project includes total reconstruction of the M-63 bridge over I-196, the resurfacing of the carpool lot at Red Arrow Highway at Exit 1, and adding a northbound I-196 auxiliary lane from eastbound I-94 to Red Arrow Highway at Exit 1.

MDOT officials says that the new pavement and bridge will extend the life of both the roadway and the bridge, and improve safety and ride quality of that stretch of the Interstate.

MDOT says that single-lane closures will be in effect on I-196, and M-63 will be closed completely during bridge reconstruction at the site of the bridge with a detour posted in order to get around that section.
